How to Clean a Rusty Can Opener and Make It Look New Again

A rusty can opener being cleaned with household supplies.
That rusty can opener sitting in your kitchen drawer might look like it’s ready for the trash—but before you replace it, there’s a simple trick that can help remove surface rust and get the gears moving smoothly again.

Can openers are constantly exposed to moisture, food residue, and humidity, making them surprisingly easy to neglect. The good news is that light surface rust doesn’t always mean your can opener is ruined. With the right cleaning method and a little maintenance, you may be able to restore it.

Why Does a Can Opener Rust?

Rust develops when metal is exposed to moisture and oxygen over time.

A can opener gets plenty of both. Liquid from canned foods can remain around the cutting wheel and gears, while rinsing it without drying it properly leaves behind moisture.

Rust can develop faster when you:

  • Leave the can opener wet after washing.
  • Allow food residue to remain around the gears.
  • Store it in a humid drawer.
  • Keep it near the kitchen sink.
  • Use a can opener made from metal that isn’t highly rust-resistant.

Even stainless-steel components can develop surface staining or rust under the right conditions.

Is Your Can Opener Still Safe to Use?

Before trying to restore it, inspect the tool carefully.

Light surface rust on an otherwise intact metal surface may be removable.

However, if the cutting wheel is deeply pitted, flaking, badly corroded, or difficult to clean completely, replacing the can opener is the safer option—especially because it comes into direct contact with food.

If rust is present on a surface that cannot be thoroughly cleaned, don’t continue using the tool.

How to Remove Light Rust With White Vinegar

White vinegar is one of the simplest options for loosening surface rust.

What You’ll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Small bowl
  • Old toothbrush
  • Warm water
  • Clean towel

Step 1: Soak the Rusty Areas

Place the rusty metal portions of the can opener in a small bowl of white vinegar.

Let them soak for approximately 30–60 minutes, checking periodically.

Don’t leave the tool soaking indefinitely, particularly if it contains different metals or components that may be affected by prolonged exposure.

Step 2: Scrub Gently

Remove the can opener from the vinegar and use an old toothbrush to gently scrub the rust.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Cutting wheel
  • Gears
  • Joints
  • Small grooves

Step 3: Rinse Thoroughly

Rinse the tool well with clean water to remove the loosened rust and vinegar residue.

Step 4: Dry Completely

Dry the can opener immediately with a clean towel.

Then allow it to air-dry completely before putting it away.

Try a Baking Soda Paste for Light Rust

If you prefer not to soak the can opener, baking soda can help with small areas of surface rust.

Mix baking soda with a little water until you have a thick paste.

Apply it to the rusty areas and let it sit for around 15–20 minutes.

Then gently scrub with a soft toothbrush.

Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately.

Because baking soda provides mild abrasion, avoid aggressive scrubbing that could damage the metal surface.

Lemon and Salt Can Help With Small Rust Spots

For small patches of surface rust, lemon and salt provide another simple option.

Sprinkle a small amount of salt over the affected area and add fresh lemon juice.

Let it sit for approximately 20–30 minutes, then gently scrub with a soft brush.

Rinse thoroughly and dry the can opener completely.

This method is better suited to light surface rust rather than heavily corroded metal.

Don’t Forget the Gears

The cutting wheel isn’t the only part that needs cleaning.

The gears can trap food particles, grease, and moisture, which can contribute to corrosion and make the handle harder to turn.

Use warm water, a little dish soap, and a soft toothbrush to clean around the gears.

Work slowly around the moving parts so you can remove trapped debris without forcing or damaging the mechanism.

What About the Aluminum Foil Trick?

You may have seen the suggestion to rub rusty metal with aluminum foil.

It can sometimes help loosen very light surface rust, but it’s not a substitute for proper cleaning.

If you try it, use gentle pressure and rinse the tool thoroughly afterward.

For more noticeable rust, vinegar or another appropriate rust-removal method is generally more effective.
