A Surprisingly Simple Routine to Keep Your Air Fryer Safe

Guide to air fryer safety tips and routines for safe cooking.

The Simple Air Fryer Cleaning Routine That Gets Rid of Burnt Smells

If your air fryer has suddenly started smelling like burnt food even when you’re cooking something completely different, don’t ignore it. That strange smell could be coming from grease, crumbs, and old food residue hiding inside the appliance.

I learned this the annoying way. My air fryer still looked reasonably clean, so I assumed it didn’t need much attention. But after a few uses, I started noticing a burnt smell that seemed to get stronger every time I cooked.

Once I finally gave it a proper clean, the difference was obvious.

The basket looked better, the strange smell disappeared, and cooking became much more pleasant. And the best part? I didn’t need expensive cleaning products or a complicated routine.

Here’s the simple way to clean your air fryer and keep it from developing that nasty burnt smell.

Why Your Air Fryer Gets So Dirty

Air fryers circulate extremely hot air around your food, which means grease and tiny food particles can travel beyond the basket.

Over time, residue can collect around:

  • The cooking basket
  • The tray or crisper plate
  • The inside walls
  • The heating element
  • Hard-to-reach corners

That buildup can eventually produce unpleasant smells, smoke, or food residue that transfers odors to your next meal.

And there’s another problem: old grease can become much harder to remove once it has been repeatedly heated.

That’s why cleaning your air fryer regularly is much easier than waiting until there’s a thick layer of baked-on residue.

How to Clean Your Air Fryer Step by Step

You don’t need a cabinet full of specialty products.

For routine cleaning, you’ll usually need:

  • Warm water
  • Dish soap
  • Soft sponge
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Soft brush or old toothbrush

1. Unplug the Air Fryer and Let It Cool

Before doing anything, switch off the appliance, unplug it, and allow it to cool completely.

Don’t start cleaning while the basket or interior is still hot. Apart from the obvious burn risk, handling hot parts makes cleaning much more difficult.

2. Remove the Basket and Tray

Take out all removable cooking components.

The basket and crisper tray usually collect most of the grease, crumbs, and food residue, so give them a thorough inspection.

Check underneath the tray too. Food particles can hide in places you don’t immediately notice.

3. Soak Away Stubborn Grease

Place the removable parts in warm, soapy water.

Let them soak for several minutes if grease has hardened onto the surface.

This is much better than immediately attacking the residue with an abrasive scrubber.

Once the grease softens, use a soft sponge or brush to remove it.

Avoid steel wool and harsh abrasive tools, especially if the basket has a non-stick coating.

4. Clean the Inside of the Air Fryer

Now comes the part people often forget.

Use a slightly damp microfiber cloth or soft sponge to wipe the inside walls.

Pay particular attention to areas where grease or crumbs have accumulated.

Don’t pour water into the appliance and don’t submerge the main electrical unit.

Instead, use a small amount of moisture on the cloth and wipe carefully.

5. Don’t Forget the Heating Element

The heating element can collect grease and tiny food particles over time.

With the appliance unplugged and completely cool, inspect the area carefully.

Use a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove accessible residue.

For stubborn particles, a soft brush can help loosen them.

Don’t spray cleaning solution directly onto the heating element or electrical components.

6. Clean the Outside

The outside of your air fryer deserves attention too.

Wipe the control panel, handle, sides, and top with a slightly damp microfiber cloth.

If you’re using dish soap, use only a small amount and don’t allow liquid to enter buttons, vents, or electrical openings.

7. Rinse and Dry the Removable Parts
