How Often Should You Wash Your Curtains? The Simple Schedule Most Homes Need

Curtains are easy to forget because they don’t look dirty in the same way floors or countertops do. But while they’re hanging quietly by the window, they’re collecting dust, pollen, pet hair, cooking odors, and whatever else is floating through the room.

That doesn’t mean you need to take them down and wash them every few weeks. In fact, washing some curtains too often can cause unnecessary wear, shrinking, fading, or damage to delicate fabrics.

For most homes, washing curtains every 6 to 12 months is enough. The right schedule, however, depends on the fabric, the room, and what’s happening inside your home.

So, How Often Should You Wash Your Curtains?

A simple schedule works for most households:

  • Most curtains: Every 6–12 months
  • Sheer curtains: Every 3–6 months
  • Kitchen curtains: Every 3–6 months
  • Homes with pets: Every 3–6 months
  • Homes with smokers: Every 3–6 months
  • Homes with allergies: Every 3–6 months
  • Low-use decorative curtains: About once a year

You don’t have to follow these dates rigidly. If your curtains look dusty, smell musty, feel greasy, or have visible pet hair, clean them sooner.

Why Curtains Get Dirty Without Looking Dirty

Curtains act almost like filters for the air around your windows.

As air moves through the room, particles can settle into the fabric. Over time, curtains may accumulate:

  • Household dust
  • Pollen
  • Pet hair and dander
  • Cooking odors
  • Smoke
  • Fine dirt from open windows

The longer these particles remain in the fabric, the more difficult they can be to remove.

That’s why regular vacuuming between washes matters almost as much as the occasional deep clean.

Your Room Makes a Difference

Not every curtain needs the same cleaning schedule.

Living Room Curtains

Living room curtains usually collect a steady amount of dust, especially if you have pets or frequently open the windows.

For most homes, washing them about every 6 months is a good starting point.

If you have shedding pets, you may want to clean them more often.

Bedroom Curtains

Bedroom curtains generally don’t encounter as much grease or heavy household traffic.

Washing them once or twice a year is usually sufficient.

However, if you keep the windows open frequently or you’re sensitive to dust and pollen, more frequent cleaning can make sense.

Kitchen Curtains

Kitchen curtains are a different story.

Steam, grease, food odors, and airborne cooking residue can settle into the fabric. Even if the curtains don’t look dirty, they can gradually develop a stale smell.

Aim for every 3–6 months, depending on how much you cook and how close the curtains are to the stove.

Before Washing Them, Check the Care Label

This is the step you don’t want to skip.

Curtains can look similar while requiring completely different care. Some are machine washable, while others need hand washing, dry cleaning, or professional care.

Look for instructions such as:

  • Machine wash
  • Hand wash
  • Dry clean only
  • Do not tumble dry
  • Do not bleach

If the label says dry clean only, don’t experiment with a washing machine just because the fabric feels sturdy.

Following the manufacturer’s instructions helps prevent shrinking, color loss, distortion, and damaged linings.
