That white, chalky layer inside your electric kettle isn’t just ugly—it could be a sign that your kettle is overdue for a deep clean. If your tea or coffee has started tasting slightly different, or your kettle takes longer to boil, mineral buildup may be the reason.
The good news is that cleaning an electric kettle doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right descaling method and a few simple precautions, you can remove limescale and keep your kettle looking and working its best.
Why Does Limescale Build Up?
If you live in an area with hard water, minerals such as calcium and magnesium can remain behind after water is boiled. Over time, these minerals form the familiar white or gray coating known as limescale.
Heavy buildup can affect the kettle’s heating performance and may also affect the taste of your drinks.
Regular descaling helps prevent the deposits from becoming difficult to remove.
Before You Start
Safety comes first when cleaning any electrical appliance.
Before cleaning:
- Unplug the kettle.
- Allow it to cool completely.
- Never immerse the kettle, power base, cord, or plug in water.
- Keep water away from the electrical base.

Method 1: White Vinegar for Limescale

Step 1: Make the Solution
Fill the kettle with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water, or follow the ratio recommended by your kettle’s manufacturer.
Don’t fill beyond the maximum level marked inside the kettle.
Step 2: Heat the Solution
Turn the kettle on and allow the solution to reach a boil, provided your manufacturer’s instructions allow this cleaning method.
Once it switches off, unplug the kettle.
Step 3: Let It Sit
Allow the solution to sit for around 15–30 minutes so it can work on the mineral deposits.
