Coffee oils build up in the carafe and brew basket, while minerals from water can accumulate inside the machine. Over time, that buildup can affect both the flavor of your coffee and how efficiently the brewer works.
The good news is that deep-cleaning a basic coffee maker doesn’t have to be complicated. The key is to clean the removable parts regularly and descale the machine when mineral buildup starts accumulating.
How Often Should You Clean a Coffee Maker?
You don’t need to deep-clean your coffee maker after every pot.
A simple routine works well:
- After every use: Wash the carafe and removable brew basket.
- Every few weeks: Wipe down the exterior and check for coffee residue.
- Every 1–3 months: Descale the machine, depending on usage and water hardness.
- Sooner if needed: Clean it when brewing slows down, the machine shows a cleaning alert, or the coffee develops an unusual taste.
Some manufacturers recommend descaling around every 3 months, while others recommend a range of 3–6 months. Hard water can make mineral buildup happen faster.

Step 1: Unplug the Coffee Maker and Let It Cool

Step 2: Wash the Removable Parts

Step 4: Run the Cleaning Cycle

Step 5: Don’t Skip the Fresh-Water Rinse

Running vinegar through the machine isn’t the end of the job.
Once the descaling cycle is finished, empty the carafe and reservoir as directed, refill with fresh water, and run the number of rinse cycles specified by your manufacturer.
You want to remove both the loosened mineral residue and any lingering vinegar taste or odor.
Some manufacturers recommend two or three fresh-water cycles, while others specify a different procedure.
If you can still smell or taste vinegar afterward, run another fresh-water cycle.
Step 6: Clean the Carafe
