You peel off the fuzzy layer.

Not necessarily.
There may be a nearly invisible layer of residue covering the screen—especially if you regularly use dryer sheets or fabric softener. And because you can’t easily see that buildup, your lint filter can look perfectly clean while airflow is becoming restricted.

But lint isn’t necessarily the only thing that ends up on the screen.
Fabric softeners and dryer sheets can leave behind a waxy or oily residue that gradually coats the tiny openings in the mesh. Even though the screen looks clean, those openings may not allow air to pass through as freely as they should.

Step 1: Remove the Lint Filter
Take the screen completely out of the dryer.
First, remove all of the loose lint by hand.
Step 2: Run Water Through It
Hold the filter under running water.
This is where you can perform a surprisingly useful little test.
If water easily passes through the mesh, that’s a good sign.
If water beads up or struggles to pass through, residue may be coating the screen.
Step 3: Give It a Gentle Scrub
Use a soft brush to clean both sides of the screen.
