That black buildup hiding inside your refrigerator door seal is easy to ignore—until you notice how much dirt, moisture, and mold can collect there. The good news is that you can usually clean a small amount of mold from a refrigerator gasket with a few simple steps.
Why Refrigerator Gaskets Get Moldy
The rubber gasket around your refrigerator door constantly comes into contact with moisture. Food crumbs, spills, and condensation can become trapped inside its folds, creating conditions where mold can grow.
The problem is particularly easy to miss because much of the buildup can hide underneath the gasket’s inner edges.
What You’ll Need
- Warm water
- Mild dish soap
- Clean microfiber cloth
- Soft toothbrush or small cleaning brush
- Clean towel
- Rubbing alcohol optional
Before cleaning, check your refrigerator manufacturer’s care instructions. Some gasket materials may have specific cleaning recommendations.
Step 1: Open the Gasket Folds
Gently pull back the rubber seal so you can see inside its folds.
Remove any visible crumbs, dirt, or other debris with a damp cloth.
Step 2: Clean With Soapy Water
Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with warm water.
Dip a soft toothbrush into the solution and gently scrub the affected areas. Pay special attention to the folds and corners where buildup tends to collect.
Avoid using an abrasive brush that could damage the rubber.
Step 3: Wipe Away the Residue
Use a clean, damp microfiber cloth to remove the loosened dirt and soap.
Go around the entire gasket, rather than cleaning only the visibly moldy section.
Step 4: Dry the Gasket Thoroughly
This step is easy to overlook, but it’s important.
Use a clean towel to dry the rubber seal and its folds completely. Leaving moisture behind can encourage mold to return.
