Why You Shouldn’t Dry Clothes Directly on a Radiator
Putting wet clothes on a radiator may seem like the quickest way to get through a cold-weather laundry day—but that shortcut can create a bigger problem inside your home. From excess humidity and condensation to mold growth and reduced heating efficiency, regularly drying laundry this way can affect more than just your clothes.
If you have no choice but to dry clothes indoors, there are safer ways to do it without turning your home into a damp environment.
Why Drying Clothes on a Radiator Can Be a Problem
Wet clothes contain a significant amount of water. As they dry, that water evaporates into the surrounding air.
When laundry is placed directly over a radiator, moisture can be released into the room relatively quickly. Without enough ventilation, the humidity can build up and eventually contribute to condensation and dampness.
You may notice:
- Condensation on windows
- A musty smell
- Damp patches
- Moisture around window frames
- Peeling paint or wallpaper
If this happens regularly, the extra moisture can create conditions where mold and mildew are more likely to develop.
It Can Encourage Mold Growth
Mold needs moisture to grow, and repeatedly drying large amounts of laundry indoors can increase the amount of moisture in the air.

Keeping the radiator as unobstructed as possible allows heat to circulate more effectively.
