Have you ever grabbed a bath towel and noticed the neat rows of lines woven across one end?

They can look like a simple decorative touch, but there’s actually a reason many towels are made this way.

Those bands are part of the towel’s woven construction. They help give the towel a finished appearance and create a transition between the soft, looped terry fabric and the edge.

So, do the lines tell you something about the towel? Not exactly. But they do reveal a little about how the towel is made.

What Are the Lines on Bath Towels?

The woven bands found near the ends of many bath towels are often called dobby borders or decorative towel borders.

Unlike the main body of a terry towel, which is covered with small loops of fabric, the border is woven in a flatter pattern.

The design can be very simple, with just a few straight lines, or much more detailed with geometric shapes and repeating patterns.

ImageThe border is easy to overlook because it has become such a familiar part of everyday towels.

But it serves several useful purposes.

1. It Gives the Towel a Finished Look

The most obvious reason for the woven border is appearance.

A plain towel can look much more polished when it has a defined band near the ends. The pattern can also coordinate with the towel’s color and make it look more decorative when folded on a shelf or hanging from a towel rack.

This is particularly noticeable in matching towel sets, where the same border design appears across bath towels, hand towels, and washcloths.

The border gives the entire set a more intentional appearance.

2. It Creates a Transition Between Different Weaves

There is also a construction reason for the border.

The main portion of a terry towel is made with raised loops. Those loops are what give the towel its familiar soft texture and help it absorb moisture.

The woven border is much flatter.

Because the two sections are constructed differently, the border creates a defined transition between the absorbent terry portion and the edge of the towel.

That is why the border can feel noticeably different when you run your hand across it.

3. It Helps Give the Ends a Structured Appearance

The flatter woven section also gives the ends of the towel a more defined look.

Instead of having the same fluffy texture from edge to edge, the towel has a neat band that visually separates the main body from the finished end.

When the towel is folded, this detail becomes especially noticeable.

It can help the towel look neat and organized rather than like one large piece of uninterrupted terry fabric.

Do More Lines Mean a Better Towel?

This is where things can be a little misleading.

A towel with an elaborate woven border may look more expensive or luxurious, but the number of lines does not tell you how good the towel is.

A simple towel with a basic border can be soft, absorbent, and durable.

When choosing a quality bath towel, it makes more sense to consider things such as:

  • Fiber and material
  • Cotton quality
  • Fabric weight
  • GSM
  • Absorbency
  • Stitching
  • Overall construction
  • Drying time

The decorative border is mainly a design and construction feature rather than a reliable quality rating.
