If weeds are popping up between your pavers, along the driveway, or around the edge of the yard, it’s tempting to reach for a bottle of vinegar and make a quick homemade spray.

And yes, some homemade mixtures can make weeds turn brown surprisingly fast.

But there’s an important catch: brown leaves don’t necessarily mean the weed is dead, and some of the ingredients commonly recommended online can create a bigger gardening problem than the weeds themselves.

That’s why the best approach depends on where the weeds are growing, how established they are, and whether you want to protect the soil and nearby plants.

First, Know What a Homemade Weed Killer Can—and Can’t—Do

Many DIY weed-killer recipes rely on ingredients such as household vinegar, salt, and dish detergent.

The appeal is obvious: the ingredients are inexpensive and already sitting in many homes.

But calling the mixture “non-toxic” or completely safe is misleading.

Penn State Extension warns against homemade weed killers containing vinegar, salt, dish detergent, Epsom salt, or bleach because they can harm desirable plants and soil, while some ingredients can create environmental or safety problems.

So before mixing anything, ask a more useful question:

Where are the weeds growing?

That one detail can completely change the best solution.

If the Weeds Are in Sidewalk or Patio Cracks

This is one situation where you have more options because you’re generally not trying to preserve living soil immediately around the weed.

For a small number of weeds, pulling them out by the roots is often the simplest solution.

If the soil has been softened by rain, the job becomes easier. Iowa State Extension recommends hand pulling and cultivation, particularly when weeds are young, before they have time to mature and produce more seeds.

For narrow cracks, a specialized crack weeder or similar narrow hand tool can help loosen the roots without disturbing a large area.

Another option for isolated weeds in pavement cracks is boiling water.

Iowa State Extension notes that boiling water can be useful where desirable plants aren’t nearby, such as sidewalk and driveway cracks. However, it may take repeated treatments, and the water can cause serious burns if handled carelessly.

So this is a job for caution—not something to casually carry around the yard in an open pot.

What About White Vinegar?

This is where many online weed-killer recipes become confusing.

Household vinegar is commonly around 5% acetic acid. At that concentration, it can damage the foliage of very young weeds, but it isn’t a dependable solution for established perennial weeds.

Penn State Extension explains that household vinegar may burn young seedlings but generally doesn’t provide adequate control of perennial weeds.

That’s because vinegar acts primarily as a contact treatment.

It damages the plant tissue it touches.

It doesn’t reliably travel down into a large established root system.

So you might see a weed turn brown within a short time and think:

“It’s gone.”

Then, a little later, new growth appears from the root.
