Keeping white clothes truly white can become surprisingly difficult.

A shirt that once looked bright and fresh can slowly turn gray or yellow after repeated washing. Sweat, body oils, detergent residue, hard-water minerals and stains can all contribute to that dull appearance. The American Cleaning Institute notes that yellowing can be related to body soil, insufficient detergent, water temperature and other laundering problems.

And while chlorine bleach is a powerful option for some washable fabrics, it isn’t suitable for everything. Wool, silk, spandex and certain finishes can be damaged by chlorine bleach, so checking the care label is always important.

Fortunately, you don’t always need chlorine bleach to freshen up your whites.

Here are three simple approaches worth trying, along with a few important mistakes to avoid.

1. Give baking soda a try

Baking soda is one of those inexpensive household products that can be useful in the laundry room.

It can help boost cleaning when added to a wash, particularly when clothes have accumulated dirt and odors. The American Cleaning Institute even recommends a baking-soda soak for heavily soiled uniforms: one cup of baking soda can be added along with laundry detergent to warm water before soaking.

For a simple whitening routine, you can try this:

  1. Fill a basin or sink with warm water, using a temperature that is safe for the fabric.
  2. Add your normal amount of laundry detergent.
  3. Add baking soda according to the product or laundry instructions.
  4. Place the white garments in the solution.
  5. Let them soak for about 30 minutes to an hour.
  6. Wash normally according to the garment’s care label.

The original trick behind this idea uses a fairly large amount of baking soda, but more isn’t necessarily better. Start conservatively rather than dumping large quantities of any cleaning product into your washing machine.

For heavily soiled laundry, the American Cleaning Institute recommends one cup of baking soda in a warm-water presoak with detergent.

Why white clothes become dull in the first place

Before trying to whiten laundry, it helps to understand why the fabric changes color.

Sometimes the problem isn’t that the white fabric has permanently changed.

It may simply have accumulated substances that weren’t completely removed during previous washes.

Body oils and perspiration can build up in areas such as collars, cuffs and underarms. Too little detergent can also contribute to poor soil removal. The American Cleaning Institute recommends using the appropriate amount of detergent and washing at the hottest temperature that is safe for the fabric.

Overloading the washing machine can make the problem worse because clothing doesn’t have enough room to move freely through the wash water.

So before reaching for an aggressive whitening treatment, make sure you’re also washing the clothes correctly.

2. Use white vinegar carefully

White vinegar is another common household laundry trick.

It can be useful in certain situations, particularly for dealing with residues and some odors. The American Cleaning Institute even recommends diluted white vinegar for removing certain blue stains caused by detergent or laundry products.

For everyday laundry, however, you don’t need to pour huge quantities into the washer.

A more sensible approach is to use a modest amount in the appropriate dispenser, following your washing machine’s instructions.

You can also use diluted vinegar as a presoak for certain stains when appropriate for the fabric.

But there’s one very important rule:

Never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach.

Bleach should not be mixed with other household cleaners because dangerous fumes can be produced. The American Cleaning Institute specifically warns against mixing bleach with ammonia or other cleaners.

So if you’re using vinegar, keep it separate from chlorine bleach.

3. Don’t overlook oxygen bleach

If your goal is genuinely whiter laundry without chlorine bleach, oxygen bleach is one of the more practical options.

Despite the name, oxygen bleach is different from traditional chlorine bleach.

The American Cleaning Institute describes oxygen, or color-safe, bleach as a gentler option that can be used on many washable fabrics. It is particularly useful for maintaining whiteness and dealing with stains.

It is commonly sold as a powder or as part of laundry products labeled “oxygen bleach” or “color-safe bleach.”

The exact amount and soaking time depend on the product, so follow the package directions rather than guessing.

For best results:

  1. Check the garment care label.
  2. Choose an oxygen-bleach product appropriate for the fabric.
  3. Follow the product’s dosage instructions.
  4. Use the recommended water temperature.
  5. Allow the product to work for the recommended amount of time.
  6. Wash the clothing normally afterward.

The American Cleaning Institute notes that oxygen bleach is most effective in warm-to-hot water, provided that temperature is safe for the fabric.
