There is a difference between discussing a situation and making someone else’s private life the entertainment of the group.

Most people occasionally talk about other people. That’s normal.

But some women become increasingly uncomfortable when a friendship seems to depend on criticizing someone who isn’t there.

Maybe the conversation starts with:

“Did you hear what she did?”

Then it becomes:

“I always knew there was something strange about her.”

And before long, an entire group is discussing someone’s marriage, finances, children, appearance, or personal problems.

A woman who doesn’t enjoy that kind of conversation may simply stay quiet.

She might change the subject.

She might say something positive about the person being discussed.

Or she may excuse herself from the conversation altogether.

That can sometimes make her appear distant.

But there is another way to look at it.

She may simply have decided that she doesn’t want friendship to depend on tearing someone else down.

And as people get older, many become much more comfortable choosing the company they actually enjoy.

They may have less patience for drama.

Less patience for arguments.

Less patience for relationships where they constantly leave a conversation wondering what was said about them afterward.

That doesn’t mean they never discuss other people.

It simply means they may prefer conversations that don’t require someone else to be the target.

3. She Is Careful About Who She Trusts

Some women make friends easily.

They meet someone at church, a community event, a neighborhood gathering, or a class, and within a few weeks they are sharing everything.

Other women take much longer.

They observe.

They listen.

They notice how someone treats other people.

They pay attention to whether a person keeps promises.

They may even watch how someone talks about friends who aren’t present.

This doesn’t necessarily mean they’re cold.

It may simply mean they’ve learned that trust should be earned rather than handed out immediately.

And life experience can change the way a person approaches friendship.

A woman who has experienced betrayal, a difficult divorce, a friendship ending badly, or years of being taken for granted may become more cautious.

She doesn’t necessarily want to repeat the same experience.

So she might have fewer friends—not because she dislikes people, but because she doesn’t let everyone become part of her inner circle.

That selectiveness can sometimes be misunderstood.

Someone may think:

“She doesn’t like anybody.”

When the reality may be:

“She doesn’t let everybody get close.”

There is a big difference.
