A bright green glass of celery juice can certainly look like the kind of drink that belongs in a “cleanse.” But there’s an important detail that many detox recipes leave out:
Your liver does not need a special juice to “flush out” toxins.
That doesn’t mean celery is useless. Far from it. Celery is a nutritious vegetable, and blending it with water and a little lemon can make a refreshing drink. The key is understanding what you’re actually getting from it—and what you shouldn’t expect it to do.
If you’re thinking about trying celery juice for liver health, here’s the part worth knowing before you make it a daily ritual.
First, Does Celery Juice Actually “Cleanse” the Liver?
Not in the way the word cleanse suggests.
Your liver already performs the body’s natural detoxification work. It processes substances in the blood, metabolizes medications and nutrients, and helps eliminate waste through bile and other pathways.
There is not good evidence that a glass of celery juice removes accumulated toxins from the liver or “flushes” the organ.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says research on detox diets and cleanses in people is limited and generally low quality, with no compelling evidence that detox diets eliminate toxins from the body.
Johns Hopkins Medicine similarly notes that liver cleanses are not recommended because they lack adequate clinical evidence and haven’t been shown to reverse liver damage.
So rather than calling this a liver detox, it’s more accurate to think of celery juice as a simple vegetable-based drink that can fit into an overall healthy diet.
What Makes Celery Worth Drinking?
Celery still has nutritional value.
USDA’s SNAP-Ed information lists celery as a low-calorie vegetable containing fiber and several nutrients, including vitamin C and potassium.
And that matters because supporting your health doesn’t require a dramatic “cleanse.”
A diet that regularly includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, and other nutrient-rich foods is a much more meaningful approach to long-term health than relying on one special drink.
What About the Antioxidants in Celery?
Celery contains plant compounds, including flavonoids such as apigenin and luteolin.
It’s reasonable to be interested in these compounds, but there’s a big difference between:
“Celery contains potentially beneficial plant compounds.”
and
“Celery juice cleans your liver.”
The first is a nutrition statement.
The second is a medical claim that requires much stronger evidence.
This distinction is especially important with health content because promising results from individual compounds or laboratory research don’t automatically mean that drinking celery juice produces the same effect in people.
