PART 1
The little girl couldn’t have been more than five.
She stood alone in the hospital lobby wearing rain boots covered in cartoon ducks, clutching a worn-out teddy bear almost as big as her chest.
I noticed her because she wasn’t crying.
Children who get lost usually cry.
She just stood there… staring at the automatic doors as if she was waiting for someone who had promised to come back.
I walked over and knelt beside her.
“Hey, sweetheart. Are you here with your mom?”
She looked at me with the bluest eyes I’d ever seen.
“My daddy said to wait.”
“When did he leave?”
She shrugged.
“A long time ago.”
I checked the front desk.
No missing child report.
No worried parent.
No security alert.
Nothing.
The volunteer handed the little girl a juice box.
She smiled politely.
“Thank you.”
Too polite.
Children abandoned by accident don’t act like that.
Children who are used to being forgotten do.
“I’m Amelia,” I said softly.
“What’s your name?”
“Lily.”
My heart skipped.
“My mommy used to call me Sunshine.”
Used to.
Not “calls.”
Used to.
Before I could ask another question, she reached into her backpack.
“I have something.”
She pulled out an old envelope with my name written across the front.
Not Nurse Amelia.
Not Ms. Carter.
Just…
Amelia Brooks.
My full name.
My hands froze.
I had never seen that handwriting before.
The envelope looked old.
Yellow around the edges.
Almost like it had been carried around for years.
“Who gave you this?”
“My daddy.”
“When?”
“He said if he didn’t come back… I had to find the nice nurse named Amelia.”
Every sound inside the hospital disappeared.
The phones.
The announcements.
The conversations.
Gone.
Only Lily’s tiny voice remained.
I slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
A young man stood outside this very hospital, holding a newborn wrapped in a pink blanket.
Written on the back were seven words.
You saved her once. Please save her again.
I turned the picture over.
The baby…
Was Lily.
And the man holding her…
Was someone I had pronounced dead six years earlier.
