Ingredients

- 1 pound pasta (such as penne or rigatoni)
- 1 pound ground Italian sausage
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh basil for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground sausage and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Remove sausage with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving drippings in the skillet.
- Add chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
- Pour in crushed tomatoes and bring to a simmer. Stir in cooked sausage and heavy cream.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Add cooked pasta to the skillet and toss to coat with the sauce. Stir in Parmesan cheese.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil if desired.
Notes
- For a spicier dish, use hot Italian sausage.
- You can add sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers with the onions.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
