A humorous story about forks vanishing from the kitchen and found under a child's bed.

PART 1

The first fork disappeared on a Tuesday.

I noticed because I was setting the table for dinner.

Three plates.

Three glasses.

Two forks.

I frowned, opened the dishwasher, then every kitchen drawer.

Nothing.

“Logan,” I called to my six-year-old son.

He looked up from the living room floor where he was building a Lego spaceship.

“Yeah?”

“Did you take one of the forks?”

He smiled.

“No.”

His answer came too fast.

I shrugged it off.

Kids lost things all the time.

The next morning another fork was gone.

Then two spoons.

A butter knife.

It became almost funny.

Every couple of days another piece of silverware simply vanished.

I blamed myself.

Maybe I accidentally threw them away with takeout containers.

Maybe they ended up in lunch bags.

Maybe I was just distracted.

After all…

The last few months had been exhausting.

My husband, Ben, had started working longer hours.

Our conversations had become shorter.

He smiled less.

Touched me less.

Every night he said the same thing.

“Just tired.”

One Saturday I bought an entire new silverware set.

Forty-eight pieces.

I even joked with the cashier.

“Hopefully these survive longer than the last ones.”

She laughed.

I didn’t.

Something about it bothered me.

That night I counted every single piece before putting them away.

Forty-eight.

Exactly.

Three days later…

Forty-three.

I stood frozen in front of the drawer.

No broken locks.

No missing dishes.

Only the forks.

Always the forks first.

That evening Ben came home carrying pizza.

I watched him carefully.

“Have you noticed the silverware disappearing?”

He barely looked up.

“Probably Logan.”

“He says he isn’t taking them.”

Ben shrugged.

“He’s six.”

Something in his voice felt rehearsed.

Like he’d answered the question before I even asked it.

Later that night…

I found Logan standing in the kitchen.

It was almost midnight.

He thought everyone was asleep.

He quietly opened the drawer.

Picked up two forks.

Looked toward the hallway.

Then slipped them inside his backpack.

My heart skipped.

“Logan?”

He jumped so hard one fork hit the floor.

His little face turned completely white.

“Mom…”

“What are you doing?”

His eyes immediately filled with tears.

“I wasn’t stealing.”

“I know.”

“Then… please don’t tell Dad.”

Every hair on my arms stood up.

“Why would I tell Dad?”

He covered his mouth.

Like he had already said too much.
