Classic sugar cookies perfect for decorating with Halloween themes. Easy to make and fun for the whole family.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • For decorating: Royal icing, sprinkles, food coloring

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  5. Divide dough in half, flatten into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to 1/4-inch thickness.
  8. Cut out desired Halloween shapes using cookie cutters.
  9. Place cookies on prepared baking sheets, about 1 inch apart.
  10. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
  11. Let cookies cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  12. Decorate with royal icing and sprinkles once fully cooled.
