Mother planning to sell her home for son's life-saving surgery check.

PART 1

The cashier slid the cashier’s check across the desk.

“Congratulations, Mrs. Carter.”

I stared at it for several seconds before picking it up.

$2,018,443.67.

Thirty years of memories.

Gone.

The little white house where my husband and I had raised our only son…

Sold in less than two weeks.

I folded the check carefully and slipped it into my purse.

The realtor smiled.

“I know this must be difficult.”

I nodded without answering.

She thought I was crying because I had lost my home.

She was wrong.

I was crying because I believed I was buying my son’s life.

Two days earlier, the surgeon at St. Luke’s Medical Center had looked me straight in the eye.

“Daniel needs surgery soon.”

“Without it…”

He never finished the sentence.

He didn’t have to.

A mother understands the words doctors refuse to say.

I drove straight from the closing office to the hospital.

Every red light felt personal.

Every minute mattered.

As I parked, I touched the envelope again.

“You’re going to be okay,” I whispered.

“I’ve got you.”

Daniel had always been my miracle.

After my husband died in a construction accident when Daniel was only nine, it had been the two of us against the world.

I worked double shifts.

Skipped vacations.

Missed birthdays.

Sold jewelry.

Delayed retirement.

Every sacrifice had one purpose.

Him.

When I reached Room 614, I stopped.

The door wasn’t completely closed.

I heard Daniel laughing.

Not the weak laugh of someone waiting for major surgery.

A carefree laugh.

Almost excited.

“…she actually sold the house.”

Another voice answered.

A young woman.

“I still can’t believe she’d do that.”

Daniel laughed again.

“You don’t know my mom.”

“She’d sell everything she owns if she thought it would save me.”

Something tightened inside my chest.

The young woman lowered her voice.

“So… when are you telling her?”

“Telling her what?”

Silence.

Then Daniel answered.

“I’m not.”

My hand froze on the doorknob.

The girl sounded nervous.

“Daniel…”

“You said the surgery isn’t even scheduled.”

“It isn’t.”

“Then why—”

“Because she doesn’t need to know that.”

I stopped breathing.
