Description

A classic apple pie recipe perfect for autumn gatherings. This pie features a flaky crust and a sweet, spiced apple filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 recipe for double pie crust
  • 6 cups thinly sliced peeled apples (about 6 medium)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Line a 9-inch pie plate with one pie crust. Trim the edges.
  3. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the pie crust.
  5. Drizzle the lemon juice over the apples. Dot the top with butter pieces.
  6. Cover the pie with the second pie crust. Crimp the edges to seal. Cut vents in the top crust.
  7. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg and sprinkle with the remaining tablespoon of sugar.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes.
  9. Reduce oven temperature to 375°F (190°C). Continue baking for 35-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  10. Let the pie cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use a mix of apple varieties like Honeycrisp, Gala, and Granny Smith.
  • If the crust starts to brown too quickly, cover the edges with aluminum foil.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
