PART 1
From the moment Jenna met Ethan, she believed she had finally found the kind of love people only talked about in stories.
After years of disappointment, Ethan appeared like a breath of fresh air. He was thoughtful, patient, and always knew how to make her smile. Their conversations lasted for hours, their jokes felt effortless, and every moment together made Jenna believe she had found someone who truly saw her.
But she didn’t know that behind Ethan’s kindness was a secret he had been hiding for years.
It started on a quiet afternoon at the beach.
The waves crashed softly against the shore as Jenna rested beside Ethan, watching the sunset paint the sky orange and gold. Everything felt perfect.
Until Ethan suddenly became serious.
“Jenna, I need to talk to you about something,” he said.
She turned toward him, smiling nervously.
“What is it?”
For a second, she thought he was about to say something romantic. Maybe he was going to talk about their future. Maybe he was going to tell her how much she meant to him.
Instead, Ethan looked at her and said:
“You need to shower twice a day.”
Jenna blinked.
“What?”
“I’m serious,” he replied. “It’s important.”
She laughed, thinking he was joking.
“Ethan, I shower every day. I take care of myself.”
His expression didn’t change.
“It’s not enough.”
Those words stayed with her.
Not enough.
At first, Jenna tried to ignore the strange feeling growing inside her. She convinced herself that Ethan was just being honest. Maybe he had a different idea of cleanliness. Maybe he was just trying to help.
So she changed.
She started showering twice a day.
She bought expensive products.
She spent more time getting ready before seeing him.
But no matter what she did, Ethan always found something wrong.
“Did you use the new soap?”
“Maybe you should try a different perfume.”
“You should be more careful before meeting people.”
Every comment seemed small, but together they slowly started breaking something inside Jenna.
She began questioning herself.
Was she really not good enough?
Was there something wrong with her?
One night, while sitting together at home, Jenna finally decided to speak.
“Ethan, can I ask you something?”
He looked up from his phone.
“Of course.”
“Why does this matter so much to you?”
His face changed slightly.
“What do you mean?”
“The showers. The perfumes. Everything. It feels like you’re trying to change me.”
For a moment, Ethan said nothing.
Then he reached for her hand.
“Jenna, I’m doing this because I care about you.”
“But do you love me as I am?”
The question hung between them.
Ethan smiled, but something about that smile felt empty.
“Just trust me.”
Those three words became harder and harder to hear.
Weeks later, Ethan invited Jenna to meet his family.
“I want you to meet my parents,” he said excitedly. “They’re going to love you.”
Jenna wanted to believe him.
But instead of feeling excited, she felt nervous.
She spent hours choosing what to wear.
She checked herself in the mirror again and again.
For the first time in her life, meeting someone’s family felt like an exam she had to pass.
When they arrived at Ethan’s parents’ house, Jenna immediately noticed something strange.
The house was beautiful. Everything was perfectly arranged. Not a single thing was out of place.
As soon as Ethan’s mother opened the door, she smiled politely.
Then her eyes moved over Jenna.
The smile disappeared.
“Oh…”
Ethan looked confused.
“What?”
His mother forced a smile.
“Nothing, darling.”
But then she turned toward Jenna.
“Before dinner, maybe you should freshen up.”
Jenna froze.
“Excuse me?”
The room became silent.
Ethan quickly stepped in.
“Mom, please.”
“No, it’s fine,” Jenna said quietly.
But inside, something broke.
She followed Ethan’s mother to the bathroom, trying to understand what was happening.
The moment she opened the door, she stopped.
The bathroom wasn’t normal.
It looked like a luxury store.
Shelves were filled with expensive perfumes, special soaps, creams, and beauty products.
But that wasn’t what caught her attention.
It was the picture sitting on the shelf.
A beautiful woman smiling at the camera.
Jenna recognized her immediately.
She was Claire.
Ethan’s ex-girlfriend.
The famous beauty influencer everyone knew.
Jenna stared at the photo, her heart sinking.
Why was Claire’s picture still here?
And why did Ethan’s entire family seem obsessed with perfection?
Then she noticed something else.
A small note beside the picture.
A handwritten sentence:
“Nobody will ever replace her.”
Jenna felt the blood leave her face.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
The showers.
The perfumes.
The constant criticism.
Was Ethan trying to turn her into someone else?
Was she just a replacement?
Before she could process it, the bathroom door opened.
Ethan stood there.
“Jenna?”
She turned slowly.
“Why is her picture here?”
Ethan’s expression changed instantly.
He wasn’t surprised that she found it.
He was scared.
“Jenna, listen…”
But before he could explain, his phone buzzed.
He reached for it quickly.
Too quickly.
Jenna saw the name on the screen before he could hide it.
Claire.
Her heart stopped.
She looked at Ethan.
“Is that her?”
Ethan said nothing.
And in that silence, Jenna realized something terrifying.
The woman from his past wasn’t gone.
She was still part of his life.
And maybe…
she had never left.
