PART 3 — The Secret They Prepared for Her

The following morning, Lucas and Elena went for a walk.

They needed to talk somewhere their mother couldn’t hear them.

“What do we do?” Elena asked.

Lucas thought for a moment.

“We can’t just give her money.”

“She’ll refuse.”

“I know.”

“We can’t buy her a new house without making her feel like we’re replacing her home.”

Lucas smiled.

“Then we won’t.”

Elena looked at him.

“What are you thinking?”

“I want to give Mom something she never gave herself.”

“What?”

“A vacation.”

Elena laughed through her tears.

“Mom doesn’t know how to take vacations.”

“Then we’ll teach her.”

They began planning.

Not just a vacation.

Something bigger.

They found a beautiful seaside town where Maria and Daniel had once dreamed of going.

Years ago, before Daniel died, they had found a brochure for the place.

Maria had kept it.

The children remembered seeing it in a drawer when they were young.

Their father had written on the back:

“One day.”

That day never came.

Lucas booked the hotel.

Elena arranged everything else.

But they didn’t tell Maria.

They simply told her:

“Pack a small suitcase.”

“For what?”

“Just trust us.”

Maria became suspicious.

“You two are planning something.”

Lucas smiled.

“You taught us to plan ahead.”

She laughed.

“I don’t like surprises.”

Elena hugged her.

“You’ll like this one.”

The next morning, they drove to the airport.

Maria stared at the terminal.

“What are we doing here?”

Lucas took her hand.

“Mom, do you remember that brochure Dad kept?”

Her eyes widened.

“The seaside town?”

“Yes.”

Maria’s lips parted.

“You didn’t…”

Elena handed her an envelope.

Inside was a plane ticket.

Her name was printed across it.

Maria stared at it for several seconds.

Then she started crying.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I can’t go.”

“Why?”

“I have work.”

Lucas laughed softly.

“You don’t have work.”

“But…”

Elena interrupted.

“Mom, for the next two weeks, you don’t have to work.”

Maria looked at both of them.

“You’re serious?”

“Very.”

On the plane, Maria sat between them.

As the aircraft climbed into the sky, she stared through the window.

“I’ve never flown before,” she whispered.

Lucas smiled.

“You sent two children across the country.”

Elena added:

“And now we’re sending you somewhere.”

Maria laughed.

Then she looked out the window.

Clouds stretched endlessly below them.

For the first time in decades, she wasn’t thinking about bills.

Or work.

Or tuition.

She was simply looking at the sky.

And remembering the young woman she used to be.
