PART 1 — THE CAMERA SHE FORGOT ABOUT
Simone had never been the suspicious type.
After eight years of marriage, she believed she knew her husband, Derrick, better than anyone.
They had built a comfortable life together. A beautiful home, good jobs, weekend dinners, vacations, and all the little routines that made marriage feel safe.
There was only one thing that had changed recently.
Derrick had become distant.
He started coming home later.
He kept his phone face down.
He stopped telling Simone where he was going.
And whenever she asked, he always had the same answer.
“Work, Simone. I’m exhausted. That’s all.”
She wanted to believe him.
So she did.
Until one ordinary Tuesday afternoon.
Simone’s meeting had been canceled at the last minute.
Instead of returning to the office, she sat in her car and opened the home-security app.
It was something she did occasionally.
The cameras had been installed two years earlier after someone broke into a neighbor’s house.
She wasn’t looking for anything.
She simply wanted to check that everything was okay.
Then she noticed something strange.
The bedroom camera was still active.
The timestamp showed:
9:47 A.M.
Simone frowned.
She watched the screen.
The bedroom door opened.
Derrick walked inside.
But he wasn’t alone.
A woman followed him.
Simone’s heart stopped.
The woman had long brown hair and was wearing a red dress.
She laughed as Derrick closed the door behind them.
Simone stared at the screen.
She couldn’t move.
Then Derrick kissed the woman.
Not a friendly kiss.
Not a mistake.
A kiss that told Simone everything she needed to know.
Her hands began to shake.
The woman touched Derrick’s face.
He smiled at her.
The same smile he used to give Simone.
For twenty-three minutes, Simone watched.
She watched the man she married betray her inside the bedroom she had decorated herself.
She watched him touch another woman in the bed they shared.
She watched the life she thought she had slowly disappear in front of her eyes.
And yet…
She didn’t scream.
She didn’t call Derrick.
She didn’t drive home.
She simply cried.
For ten minutes.
Then something inside her changed.
She wiped her face.
Locked her phone.
And whispered:
“Okay.”
She took a deep breath.
“If that’s the game you want to play…”
Her eyes hardened.
“…I’ll play it smarter.”
