Part 2: The Truth My Wife Never Had Time to Tell Me

“You’re Maya.”

It wasn’t really a question.

The smile on her face slowly disappeared.

She looked down at Lily, who was happily pulling her toward the living room, talking nonstop about the pillow fort they were going to build together.

Without realizing it, Maya reached for the silver locket around her neck.

The exact same nervous habit Sarah had whenever she was scared.

Or hiding something.

Or trying to find the courage to tell the truth.

“Mr. Cole…”

“Marcus,” I interrupted quietly.

“You can call me Marcus.”

Slowly, I pulled the journal from my pocket.

The moment she saw it, her eyes filled with tears.

She didn’t try to take it.

She simply stood there, as if years of waiting had finally come to an end.

“You found it,” she whispered.

“I did.”

A long silence filled the room.

Finally she spoke.

“She told me you would find it someday.”

I stared at her.

“When?”

“The week before she passed away.”

My heart sank.

“She wanted to tell you herself,” Maya continued. “We planned to do it together. But… she got weaker every day.”

I couldn’t find the words.

“Lily doesn’t know, does she?”

Maya shook her head.

“She only knows me as her favorite babysitter.”

Her voice broke.

“She has no idea I’m her sister.”

I slowly opened the last pages of Sarah’s diary.

Tucked inside was an envelope sealed with a glittery gold star.

One Lily probably picked herself.

My hands trembled as I unfolded the letter.

Marcus,

If you’re reading this, it means I wasn’t brave enough to tell you myself.

I’m sorry.

I was only sixteen when I had Maya.

The decision wasn’t mine.

My parents made it for me.

I never stopped loving her.

I never stopped looking for her.

When I finally found her…

I was already running out of time.

I was terrified you would think I abandoned my daughter.

But I didn’t.

I simply wasn’t allowed to keep her.

I hired Maya to babysit Lily because I wanted them to know each other before I was gone.

I wanted my daughters to have something I never had.

A sister.

Someone who would always understand.

Maya already knows everything about you.

She knows you’re the man who taught me what real love looks like.

She knows you sing Beatles songs completely off-key.

She knows you build birdhouses whenever you’re sad.

She knows you always burn the Sunday pancakes.

Please…

Love them both enough for me.

And Maya…

If you ever read this…

Forgive me for only holding you for eleven minutes.

I’ve carried you in my heart every single day since then.

Love always,

Sarah

By the time I finished reading…

Neither of us was trying to hide the tears anymore.

I handed Maya the letter.

She held it against her chest.

Then she opened her silver locket.

Inside was a tiny photograph.

A sixteen-year-old Sarah.

Holding a newborn wrapped in a hospital blanket.

Her face was swollen from crying.

But the love in her eyes was impossible to miss.

“She gave this to me the day she told me everything,” Maya said softly.

“She said she’d made two more.”

“One stayed with her.”

“And one was meant for Lily.”

I looked toward the hallway.

Lily was lying on the rug, completely unaware that her whole world had just changed.

She was coloring three stick figures holding hands.

One had long hair.

The biggest smile on the page.

I already knew who she had drawn.

Sarah.

I could barely breathe.

Everything my wife had tried so hard to protect…

Was finally beginning to make sense.
