PART 2
The drive home was silent.
Not the comfortable silence Lila knew.
This was different.
Heavy.
Broken.
She sat in the passenger seat, staring at the photograph in her hands.
The man beside Jack.
The words written behind it.
The real father.
Her entire life felt like a story someone else had written.
When they arrived home, Lila didn’t even take off her graduation gown.
She walked straight into the kitchen.
“Explain.”
Jack placed his keys on the table.
“Lila…”
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“No more protecting me. No more half-truths.”
Jack sat down slowly.
For the first time, he looked older.
Tired.
“I always knew this day would come.”
“Who is he?”
Jack stared at the photograph.
“His name was Daniel.”
“Was?”
Jack nodded.
“He’s your biological father.”
The room spun.
Lila grabbed the chair for support.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me?”
“I wanted to.”
“But you didn’t.”
Jack looked down.
“Because when you were born, Daniel disappeared.”
Lila frowned.
“What do you mean disappeared?”
Her mother stepped forward.
“Because he wasn’t the man you thought he was.”
Lila looked at her.
“You don’t get to say that. You left.”
Her mother accepted the pain in her voice.
“I know.”
Then she took a deep breath.
“Daniel wasn’t just someone who left. He was involved in something dangerous.”
Jack’s expression tightened.
“He made enemies.”
Lila looked between them.
“What kind of enemies?”
Nobody answered immediately.
And that scared her more.
Finally, Jack spoke.
“When your mother found out she was pregnant, she discovered Daniel had been hiding a completely different life.”
“What life?”
“A life connected to powerful people. Dangerous people.”
Lila shook her head.
“This sounds impossible.”
“I wish it was,” her mother whispered.
She reached into her bag and pulled out another envelope.
“I left because someone threatened us.”
Lila stared.
“Someone threatened you?”
“No,” her mother said softly.
“They threatened you.”
The words hit harder than anything else.
Jack immediately stood.
“That’s why I raised you away from everything. I changed your name. I kept you hidden.”
Lila’s eyes filled with tears.
“So my whole life was a lie?”
Jack stepped closer.
“No.”
His voice broke.
“Your life was the only real thing I had.”
That sentence stopped her.
Because she knew it was true.
Every memory came rushing back.
The garden.
The Saturday mornings.
The nights he stayed awake when she was sick.
The way he always said she was loved.
Her anger weakened, but the questions remained.
“Why did Mom come back now?”
Her mother looked toward the window.
“Because they found me.”
A cold feeling moved through Lila.
“Who found you?”
Before she could answer, a loud knock echoed through the house.
Everyone froze.
Jack’s face changed instantly.
Not fear this time.
Recognition.
He walked slowly toward the door.
“Stay behind me.”
Lila’s heart raced.
“Dad, who is it?”
Jack didn’t answer.
The knocking came again.
Three slow knocks.
Then a voice from the other side.
“Jack Thompson.”
Lila felt the blood drain from her face.
The stranger continued:
“We need to talk about Daniel’s daughter.”
And in that moment, Lila realized her mother hadn’t returned to explain the past.
She had returned because the past had finally found them.
