PART 4
Lila stared at the file sitting on the table.
A simple folder.
But somehow it felt heavier than anything she had ever held.
“Open it,” the man said.
Jack immediately shook his head.
“No.”
The stranger smiled.
“Still protecting her after all these years?”
Lila looked between them.
“Enough.”
Her voice surprised everyone.
“I’m done being the person everyone protects while they hide the truth.”
She picked up the folder.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Records.
And one picture that made her breath stop.
Daniel.
Her biological father.
Holding a baby.
Her.
On the back of the photo was a handwritten message.
“If anything happens to me, make sure Lila knows she was loved.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“He knew about me…”
Her mother nodded.
“He loved you more than anything.”
“Then why did he leave?”
The stranger answered.
“Because he was forced to.”
He explained that Daniel had discovered a corruption network involving powerful people. He tried to expose them, but when they realized he had evidence, they threatened everyone close to him.
Including his newborn daughter.
“So Jack took me away?”
“Yes,” the man said.
“He changed your identity and raised you as his own.”
Lila looked at Jack.
All the anger she had carried for years began to mix with something else.
Understanding.
“You gave up your whole life for me.”
Jack smiled sadly.
“I didn’t give up anything.”
He touched the photograph.
“I gained a daughter.”
The room became quiet.
Then the stranger placed another document on the table.
“But there is one more thing you need to know.”
Lila looked at him.
“What?”
“Your father didn’t just leave evidence behind.”
He paused.
“He left a message for you.”
Her hands trembled.
“A message?”
The man nodded.
“He knew one day you would discover the truth.”
He handed her a small device.
Lila pressed the button.
A voice filled the room.
A voice she had never heard before.
But somehow felt familiar.
“Lila…”
Her entire body froze.
“If you’re hearing this, it means I couldn’t be there to watch you grow up.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“I want you to know something. None of this was your fault. You were never a mistake. You were the best thing that ever happened to me.”
Jack looked away, wiping his eyes.
Daniel’s recording continued.
“Trust Jack. He will protect you. He always has.”
Lila looked at the man who had raised her.
Her father.
Not by blood.
But by every choice he made.
The stranger stepped back.
“My job is done.”
“Who are you?” Lila asked.
He hesitated.
“Someone who promised your father I would keep you safe.”
Then he walked toward the door.
But before leaving, he stopped.
“There’s one more secret.”
Everyone looked at him.
“Daniel wasn’t killed because he discovered the truth.”
Lila frowned.
“Then why?”
The man looked at Jack.
“Because someone close to him betrayed him.”
The room went completely silent.
Lila turned slowly toward Jack.
Her heart sank.
“Who?”
Jack’s face changed.
And for the first time, Lila saw something she never expected.
Fear.
“Your father’s betrayal came from someone we trusted.”
The stranger opened the door.
“And that person is still alive.”
The door closed.
Leaving Lila standing between the past she never knew…
and a future filled with questions she still needed answered.
