PART 4

After that call, Jenna didn’t go back to Ethan’s house.

She went home and locked the door.

For the first time since meeting him, she felt like she could breathe.

But the memories hurt.

Every compliment.

Every smile.

Every moment she thought was love.

Now she questioned all of it.

The next day, Ethan came to her apartment.

“Jenna, please open the door.”

She stayed silent.

“I know what you heard.”

Her heart raced.

“You knew?”

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.”

Jenna felt tears forming.

“You lied to me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“No. You were protecting yourself.”

Silence.

Then Ethan’s voice changed.

“You don’t understand.”

The same sentence he always used.

But this time, Jenna wasn’t confused.

She understood.

“You never loved me for who I was.”

“Jenna…”

“You loved the idea of changing me.”

The silence on the other side of the door was the answer.

Days passed.

The truth slowly came out.

Claire’s evidence reached the authorities.

The old accident was investigated again.

The story Ethan had hidden for years started falling apart.

His perfect image disappeared.

The man everyone thought they knew was finally exposed.

But Jenna still struggled with one question.

How could she miss the signs?

How could someone who seemed so loving hide so much?

One evening, she received a message.

From Claire.

“Thank you for believing me.”

Jenna smiled sadly.

Because Claire wasn’t her enemy.

She was another person who had been trapped by Ethan’s need for perfection.

Months later, Jenna stood on the same beach where Ethan first told her she needed to change.

The waves were the same.

The sunset was the same.

But Jenna wasn’t.

She was different.

Stronger.

She no longer looked at herself wondering what needed to be fixed.

She finally understood something.

The right person would never make her feel like a project.

They would love her as she was.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

For a moment, fear returned.

But when she opened it, she saw a simple sentence.

“You saved yourself.”

Jenna looked at the ocean and smiled.

The chapter with Ethan was over.

Not because she stopped caring.

But because she finally started caring about herself.

And somewhere behind her, the waves continued crashing against the shore…

washing away the last pieces of a story built on lies.
