PART 4
I stared at the paper until the words became blurry.
“That’s impossible.”
“I never signed this.”
Emily nodded.
“I know.”
The forged authorization transferred nearly two million dollars into a hospital escrow account.
But something else caught my eye.
The approval date.
It was dated…
two weeks before I sold the house.
I looked at Emily.
“How can money be transferred before it even existed?”
“That’s exactly why I called you.”
My hands trembled as I flipped through the remaining pages.
Then I saw another name.
Dr. Richard Lawson.
Chief Financial Officer.
The same man who had encouraged me to sell my home.
The same man who insisted there was “no other option.”
Suddenly everything clicked.
This had never been Daniel’s plan.
Someone had used his illness…
and my desperation…
to steal millions through fake emergency accounts.
Daniel had discovered it.
Instead of telling me…
he tried to expose them from the inside.
He let me believe he was selfish because if the hospital discovered he was investigating them…
they would cancel both surgeries.
Mine wasn’t the only forged signature.
There were dozens.
Widows.
Retired veterans.
Single parents.
Families who had sold everything to save someone they loved.
I felt sick.
Just then my phone rang.
Daniel.
For several seconds, I couldn’t answer.
Finally, I picked up.
His voice sounded weaker than I’d ever heard it.
“Mom…”
“I’m sorry.”
“I should’ve told you.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because if anything happened to me…”
“I needed someone alive to finish what I started.”
At that exact moment, police cars pulled into the hospital parking lot.
Detectives rushed through the entrance carrying boxes of evidence.
Emily looked at me.
“They’re finally here.”
“What do you mean?”
She smiled through tears.
“Your son reported everything three weeks ago.”
“He wasn’t trying to steal your money…”
“He was wearing a wire.”
I looked through the windshield as officers escorted Dr. Lawson out of the hospital in handcuffs.
Daniel hadn’t betrayed me.
He had risked his own life to stop one of the biggest medical fraud schemes our city had ever seen.
And the house I thought I had lost forever…
Three months later…
the state returned every dollar.
But the thing I got back that day…
was worth far more than two million dollars.
I got my son back.
