You may also see recommendations for horticultural vinegar with much higher concentrations of acetic acid.
That’s a completely different product from ordinary kitchen vinegar.
Some horticultural vinegar products contain 20–30% acetic acid and can cause rapid burning of plant tissue. But concentrated acetic acid can also cause serious chemical burns, permanent eye damage, and respiratory irritation. Penn State specifically emphasizes protective equipment and careful label reading for these products.
In other words:
More concentrated doesn’t mean “more natural and harmless.”
It means stronger acid—and stronger safety precautions.
If you choose a commercial herbicide or horticultural vinegar product, follow its label rather than turning an online recipe into a stronger mixture yourself.
The Ingredient I’d Be Most Careful About: Salt
Salt is often added to homemade weed-killer recipes because it can damage plant tissue by interfering with water movement.
The problem is that salt doesn’t know the difference between a weed and something you want to keep.
Repeated applications can contribute to salt accumulation and can injure nearby grass, flowers, shrubs, and trees.

That’s an important distinction:
A kitchen product isn’t automatically a gardening product.
If a product is formulated and labeled for weed control, its directions provide information about concentration, application, protective equipment, and where it can legally be used.
A homemade mixture doesn’t give you that same tested framework.
What I Would Use Instead for a Small Weed Problem
If you have just a few weeds, you may not need a spray at all.
1. Pull young weeds early
Pull them while they’re small and before they produce seeds.
Work when the soil is moist, and try to remove the root rather than snapping off the top.
2. Use a narrow hand tool for cracks
A crack weeder, patio knife, or similar tool can make it much easier to get underneath weeds growing between pavers.
3. Use mulch in garden beds
If weeds are appearing around ornamental plants or vegetables, prevention is usually better than repeatedly spraying.
Mulch can block light and make it harder for new weeds to establish.
4. Keep bare soil covered
Bare patches are invitations for new weeds.
Planting desirable ground cover or maintaining a healthy layer of mulch can reduce the space available for weeds to take hold.
What If the Weeds Keep Coming Back?
This is where it’s worth changing your strategy.
If the same weed repeatedly returns after you spray or pull it, don’t simply keep adding more of the same treatment.

A Simple Rule for Choosing Your Method
Here’s an easy way to think about it:
A few young weeds → pull them.
Weeds in pavement cracks → mechanical removal or carefully used boiling water can be practical.
Weeds in a garden bed → protect the soil and desirable plants; use mulch and targeted removal.
Large or persistent infestations → identify the weed and choose a properly labeled control method.
Unknown DIY recipe → don’t assume it’s safe just because the ingredients are common household products.
What About Bleach, Epsom Salt, or Other Viral Recipes?
I’d skip them.
Penn State Extension specifically warns about homemade weed-control recipes involving bleach, Epsom salt, table salt, vinegar, and dish detergent. Bleach can damage soil organisms and may react with other chemicals to produce hazardous gases. Epsom salt also isn’t supported by strong evidence as a selective weed killer.
And one rule should always stay in place:
Never mix household chemicals together just to make a “stronger” weed killer.
The fact that a recipe has gone viral doesn’t make the chemistry safe.

A homemade weed killer can sound like the perfect shortcut: inexpensive, simple, and supposedly harmless.
But “homemade” and “non-toxic” are not the same thing.
