PART 2
I stared at Hannah.
“Lily?”
She nodded weakly.
Then the heart monitor began beeping faster.
The nurse gently moved us back.
“She needs to rest.”
Before I could ask another question, Hannah closed her eyes again.
Ryan led us into a quiet family room.
Jake folded his arms.
“You’ve got about ten seconds before I lose my patience.”
Ryan didn’t argue.
He reached into his wallet.
Pulled out a photograph.
It showed Hannah.
Smiling.
Standing beside a little girl with curly brown hair.
About five years old.
The child looked almost identical to Hannah.
I couldn’t breathe.
“Who is that?”
Ryan looked straight at me.
“Her daughter.”
Silence.
Jake laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because his brain refused to believe it.
“My sister doesn’t have a daughter.”
“She does.”
“No.”
Ryan slid another document across the table.
A birth certificate.
Mother:
Hannah Carter.
I grabbed it with shaking hands.
“This has to be fake.”
“It isn’t.”
Jake slammed his fist onto the table.
“Where has this child been?”
“With us.”
“Us?”
“My wife and I.”
The room spun.
Ryan took a deep breath.
“Hannah became pregnant six years ago.”
I felt sick.
“Who did this to her?”
Ryan immediately shook his head.
“No.”
“It wasn’t abuse.”
Jake stared at him.
“What are you talking about?”
Ryan wiped tears from his face.
“Hannah fell in love.”
“And she got married.”
Neither of us spoke.
“Legally.”
“With witnesses.”
“With our family’s blessing.”
My voice cracked.
“She… got married?”
Ryan nodded.
“She begged us not to tell you.”
“Why?”
His answer broke my heart.
“Because she spent her whole life hearing people say she couldn’t live like everyone else.”
“She wanted one thing…”
“…to prove she could build a family before anyone tried to stop her.”
Before I could process a single word…
The ICU doors flew open.
A doctor hurried toward us.
His face had changed.
“Is Ryan Mitchell here?”
Ryan stood up immediately.
“Yes.”
The doctor looked at all of us before speaking.
“We’ve found something in Hannah’s medical scans…”
“…and it changes everything we thought we knew about the accident.”
