PART 2
“I thought it had to be a mistake,” Lily said softly.
“So I called the foundation.”
Charlotte couldn’t take her eyes off the letter.
“I barely remember him.”
“He remembered you.”
Lily smiled sadly.
“He remembered everything.”
According to the foundation, William Harper had visited the oncology wing every Christmas.
He never invited cameras.
Never gave interviews.
He simply walked from room to room, talking to patients.
One afternoon, he had stopped outside Charlotte’s room.
She had no idea who he was.
She had simply thanked him for bringing books to the children across the hall.
Before leaving, she’d told him something he never forgot.
“If I survive this…”
“I’m going to spend the rest of my life making sure my daughter never has to be afraid.”
William left the room without saying much.
The next morning…
every unpaid bill disappeared.
Anonymous donor.
Case closed.
Charlotte covered her mouth.
“Oh my God…”
Lily nodded.
“He paid for everything.”
“But why didn’t anyone tell me?”
“They signed confidentiality agreements.”
“You weren’t supposed to know.”
Charlotte leaned back in her chair, unable to speak.
“So…”
“What does this have to do with you?”
Lily looked away.
“I wanted to thank him.”
“You flew to New York?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“We talked.”
Charlotte noticed tears forming in her daughter’s eyes.
“He wasn’t anything like the newspapers.”
“He was funny.”
“Kind.”
“Lonely.”
Months passed.
They stayed in touch.
Then one evening…
William told Lily something he’d never told another living person.
He was dying.
He had less than a year to live.
Charlotte reached across the table and grabbed her daughter’s hand.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Lily’s lips trembled.
“I married him last week.”
The room went completely silent.
Charlotte felt the coffee mug slip from her fingers and shatter across the kitchen floor.
“I didn’t marry him for his money.”
Lily whispered.
“I married him because…”
Before she could finish…
someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Charlotte looked through the window.
A black SUV was parked outside.
A man in a dark suit stood on the porch.
When Charlotte opened the door…
he handed her a sealed envelope.
“Mrs. Bennett…”
“Mr. Harper asked us to deliver this only if your daughter told you the truth.”
Charlotte looked at the envelope.
Across the front, written in William’s handwriting, were seven words that made her blood run cold.
“This marriage was never Lily’s idea.”
