PART 2
I knelt beside him.
“It’s okay.”
“You can tell me.”
He looked toward the stairs.
As if someone was listening.
Then he whispered…
“Dad said if you ever found the forks… everything would be ruined.”
I felt my stomach twist.
“What does that mean?”
“I don’t know.”
“He just said I had to hide them.”
“Where?”
Logan hesitated.
Then grabbed my hand.
“Come.”
He led me into his bedroom.
Dropped to his knees.
Reached beneath the bed.
Instead of forks…
He pulled out a small wooden box.
Inside…
Twenty-three forks.
Perfectly lined up.
Like someone had counted them.
But that wasn’t what frightened me.
There was something underneath them.
A folded envelope.
It had my name written across the front.
Emily.
My hands started shaking.
“When did Dad give you this?”
“He said…”
Logan swallowed.
“…he said I could only give it to you if he didn’t come home.”
The room spun.
Ben had left for Chicago that morning.
He wasn’t due back until Monday.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note.
If you’re reading this…
it means someone found the forks before I could explain.
Don’t call me.
Don’t call the police.
Take Logan and leave the house immediately.
There isn’t much time.
My pulse exploded.
At that exact moment…
Someone unlocked the front door.
Logan looked at me in terror.
His tiny voice barely escaped.
“Mom…”
