Christine reflects on her lost babies and their legacy through her spontaneous triplets.

PART 2

I finally told my mom.

I was 10 weeks pregnant.

I told her I was expecting triplets.

She immediately wrapped her arms around me.

She cried with me.

Then she said something I’ll never forget:

“God gave you these three babies for a reason.”

But I didn’t believe her yet.

I kept asking:

“Why me?”

I felt like God was punishing me.

I couldn’t understand why my life had suddenly become so complicated.

Then my mom reminded me of something.

I’d already lost three babies through miscarriages during my adult life.

She looked at me and asked:

“Christine, you’ve lost three babies. Do you think this is God’s way of giving your lost babies back?”

I sat there crying.

And suddenly, something changed inside me.

It felt like a light had come through the darkness.

I realized I wasn’t being punished.

Maybe this wasn’t a test.

Maybe these babies were exactly where they were supposed to be.

Maybe this was my reason.

A few weeks later, I began seeing a perinatologist—a specialist in high-risk pregnancies.

And he gave us another incredible surprise.

He explained that my triplets appeared to have been conceived at two different times.

Baby C was about a week further along than Babies A and B.

Babies A and B were identical twins.

Baby C was fraternal.

I didn’t even know that was possible.

The surprises just kept coming.

At around 16 weeks, the doctor asked whether we wanted to know the babies’ sexes.

Of course we did.

But I wanted the results written down because we had a family trip to Disney World planned.

We wanted to surprise everyone there.

We arranged three Mickey ears.

Everyone gathered together.

Then came the countdown.

**Three…

Two…

One!**

Hat A:

GIRL.

Hat B:

GIRL.

Hat C:

GIRL.

Three girls.

I was crying so hard I could barely process it.

I was about to become a mother of five girls.

My husband was crying happy tears again.

And my oldest daughter was absolutely thrilled.

She had really wanted a brother.

But the pregnancy was far from over.

At our regular appointments, the perinatologist told us that Babies A and B needed to be watched very closely.

They shared a sac and an umbilical cord.

That meant they were at risk for Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome, a serious complication where the babies can have an unequal exchange of blood and nutrients.

The doctor warned us that if one baby stopped growing, we could lose one or both babies.

My heart couldn’t take it.

We had finally told everyone we were expecting triplets.

Now we were facing another terrifying possibility.

Week after week passed.

20 weeks.

21 weeks.

22 weeks.

23 weeks.

Then everything changed.

The doctor discovered that Baby A had stopped growing.

They told me I needed to deliver the babies within days, or we could lose all three.

I was devastated.

I was only 23 weeks pregnant.

But then the perinatologist gave us one last possibility.

He called it a “Hail Mary.”

I needed to get from Atlanta to Houston immediately.

A medical transport team was coming to take me to Texas, where specialists could perform a procedure that might save my babies.

Within hours, my husband was arranging care for our older children, packing our bags and praying that everything would be okay.

I was being flown across the country…

still pregnant with three little girls whose lives depended on what happened next.
