PART 4

The next several weeks were terrifying.

Every day brought another challenge.

Another medical term to learn.

Another number to worry about.

Another reason to wonder whether my babies were going to make it.

The NICU became our world.

We learned how to care for our daughters in ways we’d never imagined.

We learned how to change diapers inside incubators.

How to give them tiny “hand hugs.”

How to do skin-to-skin contact.

How to be parents from behind glass and surrounded by machines.

Then, on April 13, my birthday, the phone rang.

It was the neonatologist.

I was terrified.

But this time, the news was different.

He told me:

“Something happened last night. The girls have finally taken a turn for the better.”

I couldn’t believe it.

After weeks of fear, I could finally breathe.

The doctor warned us that we weren’t out of the woods yet.

There was still a long road ahead.

But he believed my girls were going to make it.

For the first time, I allowed myself to truly hope.

Then came the longest wait.

103 days.

One hundred and three days of learning a completely new kind of parenting.

Our daughters had started out weighing just:

1 pound, 10 ounces.

2 pounds.

2 pounds, 3 ounces.

But little by little, they grew.

Eventually, they reached:

5 pounds, 10 ounces.

5 pounds, 3 ounces.

6 pounds.

They went from tiny preemie diapers to newborn sizes.

From being surrounded by machines…

to finally getting ready to go home.

On July 2, 2019, after 103 days in the NICU, I finally got to bring my girls home.

I had spent months wondering whether we’d ever reach that moment.

And now it was real.

I was taking all three babies home.

Our family was finally together.

And I knew something for certain:

These girls were my heroes.

They had fought from the very beginning.

They had survived circumstances that had terrified us.

They had shown me a strength I never knew such tiny people could possess.

Now I had to learn a completely new way of parenting.

I wasn’t just raising one baby.

I was raising three babies at once, alongside my two older daughters.

It was exhausting.

It was chaotic.

It was nothing like the life I’d imagined.

But would I change it?

Absolutely not.

These girls changed me.

They helped me grow as a person.

They changed the way I see motherhood.

And they taught me that sometimes the greatest blessings arrive in ways that initially scare us.

Today, our family is anything but ordinary.

We’re a family of seven.

We travel.

We go on adventures.

We go to Disney.

We explore.

We live spontaneously—just like our triplets.

And when I look back at that terrified woman on the ultrasound table who heard:

“You’re carrying triplets.”

I wish I could go back and tell her one thing:

Don’t be afraid.

You don’t know it yet, but these three little girls are going to become your heroes.

They are going to change your life.

They’re going to challenge you.

They’re going to make you stronger.

And they’re going to fill your heart in ways you never imagined.

I thought I was being given something impossible.

Instead, I was given three miracles.

And today, I wouldn’t trade this life for anything.

They are my heroes.
