PART 2

The room felt smaller.

The air itself seemed heavier as Jack placed the file on the table.

Emma stared at him, confused.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

Jack didn’t answer immediately.

He opened the folder slowly and pulled out a document.

“Emma… before you read this, I need you to understand something.”

Her hands tightened.

“What?”

“Everything I did was to protect you.”

My heart sank.

Those words.

I had heard them before.

From Jack.

From myself.

Everyone claimed they were protecting Emma.

But nobody ever asked her what she wanted.

“What is in that file?” I asked.

Jack looked at me.

“Your daughter’s birth records.”

Emma frowned.

“My birth records?”

“Yes.”

She took the papers from him.

At first, her expression was normal.

Then it changed.

Confusion.

Shock.

Fear.

“What is this?”

Her voice became a whisper.

I moved closer.

“What does it say?”

Emma looked at me.

“Mom…”

Something in her eyes terrified me.

“Why does it say my biological father is not the man listed on my birth certificate?”

My entire body froze.

The room went silent.

“What?”

Emma looked back at the papers.

“The name on my original records… it’s different.”

Jack sat down.

“This is the truth nobody wanted you to know.”

I looked at him.

“Nobody?”

He nodded.

“Not even your father.”

Emma swallowed.

“So who is my real father?”

Jack hesitated.

And that hesitation was the answer.

“His name was Michael.”

I felt dizzy.

Because that name was familiar.

Too familiar.

“Michael…”

Jack looked at me carefully.

“You knew him.”

I stepped back.

“No.”

But memories started returning.

A young man.

A hospital hallway.

A promise made years ago.

A secret I had buried.

Emma noticed my reaction.

“Mom?”

I couldn’t speak.

Because suddenly, the past I thought was gone was standing in front of me.

Jack looked at me sadly.

“I knew this day would come.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“You knew?”

Jack nodded.

“I discovered the truth years ago.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because your mother asked me not to.”

Emma looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw pain in her eyes.

Not anger.

Pain.

“Mom… what happened?”

I sat down slowly.

My hands were shaking.

“Michael was someone I knew before you were born.”

Emma waited.

I had spent 23 years protecting her from the truth.

But maybe the truth was the only thing that could finally set us free.

“Michael wasn’t just a stranger.”

I looked at my daughter.

“He was the person who saved me when I had nothing.”

Jack nodded.

“He was also the person who disappeared before Emma was born.”

Emma wiped her tears.

“So he abandoned us?”

“No.”

Jack answered before I could.

“He didn’t abandon you.”

Everyone looked at him.

“He was forced to leave.”

Emma’s face changed.

“Why?”

Jack opened another document.

“Because Michael discovered something dangerous.”

“What?”

Jack looked at me.

“Something about Emma’s birth.”

My heart stopped.

“What are you saying?”

Jack took a deep breath.

“Emma wasn’t supposed to survive.”

Emma went pale.

“What?”

“The doctors believed there were complications during the pregnancy. Michael found out someone had interfered with the medical records.”

The room became silent.

Someone had tried to hide the truth.

Someone had changed her story.

Her identity.

Her entire life.

Emma stood up.

“Who would do that?”

Jack looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.”

Then his phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Jack looked at the number.

His face lost all color.

“Who is it?” Emma asked.

He didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, he picked up.

“Hello?”

A voice came from the other side.

A voice that made Jack’s expression change completely.

“I know you found the file.”

Jack stood up.

“Who is this?”

A pause.

Then:

“The person who knows what really happened to Michael.”

Emma grabbed Jack’s arm.

“What did they say?”

Jack looked at her.

His voice was barely audible.

“They said…”

He swallowed.

“Your real father is still alive.”

My heart stopped.

Emma stared at him.

Impossible.

After 23 years…

after all the secrets…

after all the lies…

the man we thought was gone…

might still be out there.

And he wanted to meet his daughter.
