Mother planning to sell her home for son's life-saving surgery check.

PART 2

I stayed perfectly still outside the room.

Every instinct told me to walk in.

Instead…

I listened.

“I only need enough money to disappear for a while,” Daniel said.

“The doctors think I need treatment.”

“My mom believes every word they tell her.”

The girl sounded horrified.

“You’re talking about your own mother.”

“I know.”

“You don’t feel guilty?”

He sighed.

“You didn’t grow up with her.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means she’s spent my entire life making decisions for me.”

“What college.”

“What career.”

“Who I should date.”

“This…”

He paused.

“…is finally my chance to live my own life.”

The girl whispered,

“By stealing two million dollars from her?”

“I call it borrowing.”

My knees almost gave out.

Borrowing?

The money represented everything I’d spent a lifetime building.

Our home.

My retirement.

My future.

His father’s memories.

Everything.

A nurse walked past me.

“Mrs. Carter?”

I forced a smile.

“I… forgot something in my car.”

She nodded and kept walking.

I turned the corner before my legs completely gave out.

I sat alone in the empty family waiting room for nearly an hour.

Not crying.

Not angry.

Just…

trying to understand how the little boy who used to hold my hand crossing the street had become someone I no longer recognized.

Finally, I reached into my purse.

The check was still there.

Untouched.

For the first time since selling the house…

I didn’t know if I should give it to him.

Then my phone vibrated.

Unknown Number.

I almost ignored it.

Instead…

I answered.

“Mrs. Carter?”

“Yes?”

“My name is Emily.”

“I’m one of the nurses working on your son’s floor.”

My stomach tightened.

“I shouldn’t be calling you.”

“But after what I heard today…”

My heart stopped.

“What did you hear?”

A long silence.

Then she whispered,

“Your son isn’t lying about everything.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“The surgery…”

“is real.”

“But it isn’t for Daniel.”

I felt every drop of blood leave my face.

“What are you talking about?”

Emily’s voice broke.

“If you hand him that check before you know the whole truth…”

“…someone innocent is going to die.”
