PART 3
The room remained frozen.
Nobody knew what to say.
Danny’s question kept echoing through the walls.
“Why didn’t you save her?”
Mike stood there like a man who had suddenly lost the ability to breathe.
His eyes moved from Danny to Chloe’s picture, then slowly back to his son.
“Danny… you don’t understand what happened.”
But Danny’s expression didn’t change.
For the first time in a year, Clara saw something behind her son’s silence.
Not only pain.
Fear.
“Then tell me,” Danny whispered.
The entire family stared.
Because Danny was finally speaking.
But every word carried a weight that made everyone uncomfortable.
“Tell me what happened that day.”
Mike looked away.
His hands started shaking.
Clara noticed.
And for the first time, she wondered if Mike had been hiding more than grief.
“Mike?” she said softly.
Her husband didn’t answer.
“Mike, what is Danny talking about?”
A heavy silence filled the room.
Then Danny stepped closer.
“I saw it.”
Clara’s heart stopped.
“What did you see, sweetheart?”
Danny looked at his father.
“I saw Chloe before she fell.”
Everyone became still.
Mike’s face lost all color.
“What are you saying?” Clara asked.
Danny swallowed hard.
His voice trembled.
“I remember everything.”
A wave of shock moved through the room.
For a year, everyone believed Danny had blocked out the memory.
But maybe he hadn’t forgotten.
Maybe he had been carrying it alone.
“I remember Dad shouting,” Danny continued.
Mike immediately shook his head.
“No…”
“I remember Chloe crying.”
“Danny, stop.”
“And I remember someone else being there.”
The room exploded with whispers.
Someone else?
Clara felt a cold feeling spread through her chest.
“What do you mean someone else?”
Danny looked down.
“I don’t know who it was.”
Mike suddenly stepped forward.
“Enough.”
His voice was louder than anyone expected.
Everyone turned toward him.
Clara stared at her husband.
Why was he angry?
Why wasn’t he comforting Danny?
“Mike…” she whispered.
But he avoided her eyes.
Danny looked at him with disappointment.
“You told me to forget.”
Mike froze.
Clara felt her stomach drop.
“What?”
Danny continued.
“After Chloe died, Dad told me never to talk about that day.”
The room went completely silent.
Clara slowly turned toward Mike.
“Is that true?”
Mike opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was the answer.
Tears filled Clara’s eyes.
“All this time…”
Her voice cracked.
“You knew he remembered?”
Mike rubbed his face.
“I was trying to protect him.”
“Protect him from what?” Clara asked.
But before Mike could answer…
A loud knock came from the front door.
Everyone turned.
Nobody moved.
Another knock.
Stronger this time.
The family looked at each other.
Who would come at this hour?
Mike’s expression suddenly changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
And Clara noticed.
“You know who that is.”
Mike didn’t answer.
The knocking continued.
Danny slowly walked toward the door.
“Don’t,” Mike said quickly.
Danny stopped.
Because his father’s voice sounded terrified.
Clara felt a chill.
“What are you afraid of, Mike?”
Before he could respond, the door opened.
Standing outside was an older man wearing a dark jacket.
His face was serious.
His eyes immediately found Danny.
“I knew you would remember eventually,” the man said.
Clara stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
The stranger looked at Mike.
Then back at Danny.
“My name is Robert.”
Nobody spoke.
“I was there that day.”
Clara felt the world shift.
“What day?”
Robert took a deep breath.
“The day Chloe disappeared.”
Mike’s face turned pale.
“Robert, leave.”
But Robert ignored him.
“You deserve to know the truth.”
Clara’s heartbeat raced.
“What truth?”
Robert looked at Danny.
“Your sister didn’t fall into the river by accident.”
A silence followed.
A terrifying silence.
Clara covered her mouth.
Danny stared at the man.
And Mike looked like his biggest fear had finally returned.
Robert continued:
“Chloe was pushed.”
The room erupted in shock.
“No…” Clara whispered.
Her eyes moved toward Mike.
Because everyone had the same question.
If it wasn’t an accident…
Then who was responsible?
Robert looked at Mike.
And said the words that destroyed everything.
“Your husband knows who did it.”
